Cryptosporidium is a protozoan parasite of vertebrates. It has been associated with diarrheal illness in most parts of the world and is a frequent cause of traveler’s diarrhea.

The disease is transmitted by the thick-walled oocyst, which is remarkably resistant to common disinfectants and routine chlorination of drinking water. Person-to-person transmission is common. Cryptosporidiosis is a serious opportunistic infection in patients with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.

Clinical manifestations include diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and weight loss. In healthy persons, the infection usually is self-limiting. In AIDS and immunosuppressed patients, the disease may be prolonged and may become life-threatening.

The CRYPTOSPORIDIUM II test is an ELISA for the rapid detection of Cryptosporidium oocyst antigen in human fecal specimens and serves as an in vitro diagnostic aid in the diagnosis of patients with diarrhea suspected of Cryptosporidium gastrointestinal infection.

Q: How is the CRYPTOSPORIDIUM II different from the CRYPTOSPORIDIUM TEST?
A: The CRYPTOSPORIDIUM II has a simplified test procedure with fewer components and incubation steps than the CRYPTOSPORIDIUM TEST. See the package insert for specific information regarding test protocol.

Q: Can I read the CRYPTOSPORIDIUM II visually?
A: Yes, the back of the instructional card contains a color chart. This will enable you to interpret read the test results without the aid of a spectrophotometer.

Q: What type of sample can I use in the CRYPTOSPORIDIUM II?
A: Samples that arrive in 10% buffered formalin, Sodium Acetate Formalin (SAF), or transport medium such as Cary Blair and C&S and those that are fresh or frozen can be used. Preserved samples can be dispensed directly into the well without further dilution. Remember to cover the plate to prevent evaporation of samples that are in formalin based preservatives/fixatives as evaporation of the samples will cause them to adhere to the plate and make washing extremely difficult. Fresh or frozen samples should be diluted 1:5 in Diluent.

Q: Can I use a combined Giardia/Cryptosporidium test instead of individual parasite tests?
A: Combination tests are excellent diagnostic aides when utilized as screening tests. Because the treatments for giardiasis and cryptosporidiosis differ, for definitive results, follow-up testing is required with parasite-specific tests such as the GIARDIA II kit and the CRYPTOSPORIDIUM II kit for a complete parasitology profile.
